Success at the Australian Small Winemakers Show

Posted by Steve on 25 November 2014

Our latest red wines have scored very well at the recent Australian Small Winemakers Show

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2013 Shiraz Cabernet both won a Silver medal!

The 2013 Shiraz, a crowd favourite at the Cellar Door scored 0.5 points less than a Bronze medal, a solid result.

These wines are the first red wines that have been made by Steve, on-site in our new winery, so the good results are a great start.

If you are in the Granite Belt area, we now have these new red wines, plus our latest barrel matured Reserve Chardonnay available to add to our excellent sparkling wines and white wines. So drop in and say G’day

Our New Reserve Red Wines have Arrived!

We are proud to present our very special Reserve red wines from the 2012 Vintage. These wines were produced after crop thinning at veraison, resulting in a smaller number of more intensely flavoured grape bunches. The wines produced are stunning! The Shiraz is rich and spicy with lovely notes of pepper and rich red berries. The Cabernet Sauvignon is a complex and fruit driven wine with subtle blackcurrant fruit beautifully integrated with sweet oak. Check these wines out at www.girrraweenestate.com.au/shop

Upcoming Events

We are planning a number of events that our customers in Brisbane and the Gold Coast should look out for. These include;

  • Wine vs Beer Challenge at Green Beacon Brewing, Teneriffe. Planned for June
  • Huey’s Sunroom Wine Dinners – our regular wine and food matching events at Huey’s Sunroom, Kingscliff. Come and sample Chef Clive’s creations and sample our wonderful wines. Or go to Huey’s Sunroom for lunch and dinner any time to enjoy some great food, great beers and of course our wines! www.hueyssunrrom.com

The Magnificent Seven

A group of Seven Granite Belt producers have formed the “Magnificent Seven” These are highly awarded boutique winemakers who grow their own grapes, make and bottle the wine and who will meet you at their Cellar Door to talk to you about their winemaking philosophy. If you are into authentic hand crafted top quality wines you must visit all Seven. Keep an eye out for our launch event in Brisbane and also look out for the Magnificent Seven brochure when you visit the Granite Belt

Vintage Report 2014

What a season! Frost at the start of the season and a VERY dry growing season conspired to reduce yields this year. It was noticeable to me that the number of birds were very low this year – maybe it was the relatively hot dry weather? But despite these problems, our wines are looking very good. Fruit quality was excellent and the fermentations have gone very smoothly. You can expect some very good Granite Belt wines from 2014.

Growing Season 2012-13 Update

Posted by Steve on 17 February 2013

It has been a very busy growing season. We have had good spring rain, heaps of sunshine and moderate temperatures – fairly well perfect!

The Sauvignon Blanc is in –  we had a much larger crop this year and the quality of the juice was excellent, rich flavour and a good amount of acid to add crispness.

The Chardonnay is next and looks in great condition, the Shiraz looks like a bumper crop and the Cabernet Sauvignon is also looking like a better crop than last year. The usual problems of birds and rain are still a challenge. The nets are all on to stop the birds and rainfall has not been too high yet – fingers crossed for the next two months!

I have attached photos from this season so far …..

Winter on the Granite Belt is beautiful and COLD! Our work programme this year has included pruning and cleaning up ready for Spring’s flush of growth. Frosty mornings and sunny days.

The Girraween Estate 2012 release wines are almost ready, including our first red wine since taking over the vineyard in 2009. Our 2010 Shiraz is an elegant wine, which will be appreciated by those who enjoy cool climate Shiraz.

Look out for our next post, which will announce our new vintage wine release.

The Battle with the Birds begins!

Posted by Steve on 29 January 2012

The last few weeks at the vineyard have been spent on trying to stop the birds getting the fruit! Crows and Parrots are the biggest problem and the relatively dry season means the birds are all looking for easy feed!

Also the wild deer and pigs have been having a go at the fruit.

Our solution is to net the vineyard, hopefully this will give us really great quality fruit for the 2012 vintage.

Check out our photos of the netting effort…..
